Over the years I have purchased some Instructional Guitar Videos, some have been informative and some I have watched just for the entertainment value without really learning much as I am a self-taught Guitar/Bass Player.
Some of these videos are extremely rare and very hard to find, especially the ones by:
Jeff Baxter (former Guitarist and Studio Musician with the Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan)
Carlos Rios (former Guitarist for Gino Vanelli's Brother to Brother Album and Studio Musician)
These two videos are extremely hard to find.
Recently I came across this new Video of Paul Jackson Jr. called: The Science of Rhythm Guitar
Paul Jackson Jr. is one of my favorites! This video is extremely rare!
Check it out:
Below: Here is a Rare Video Clip of Carlos Rios from his Instructional: Feel the Music: 1993, enjoy!
Here is a rare Video Clip of Hiram Bullock (Guitar) with Alex Foster (Sax) and Gerald Veasley (Bass) I believe (in Germany[?]) in the late 80's.
Sadly, Hiram Bullock passed away on July 25th, 2008.
He was a great inspiration to me when I was learning Guitar. I loved his feel and passion!
A few others I have that are very hard to come by are: Al Mckay (1984, Starlicks); Lee Ritenour (1987, Starlicks); Andy West: Creative Musical Approaches For Progressive Electric Bass (1988, BackStage Pass); Larry Mitchell (1992, REH); Don Mock: The Blues From Rock to Jazz (1988, REH); and of course: Tony Macalpine's: Guitar Lessons (1990, Shrapnel Records).
While all these videos I have listed are good in a lot of ways and rare, I must admit I mostly learned from them to be a better musician than Guitarist as they were more for entertainment than learning purposes.
1. Jeff Baxter: Guitar for the 21st Century
(1993, 70 Mins.)
(The Jeff Baxter video is so Kool! He is very laid back and gives a lot of good advice. He is such a good Guitarist and very fluent in many styles of Guitar. This Video is Extremely rare to find and what a treat -- great video!)
2. Carlos Rios: Feel the Music
(1994, 70 Mins.)
(Carlos Rios is a Lefty Guitar Player -- Lefties are the best -- I am a Lefty...lol... This video is very rare just as much as the Jeff Baxter. Carlos gives great advice and has a smooth sound and the video is laid back as Carlos explains a lot of his experience while sitting on a leather sofa as he is interviewed -- another great video! Very entertaining)
3. Hiram Bullock: Groove Music
(Hiram Bullock has a sound all his own! Wicked nasty solos in this video. Although Hiram comes across as a nice guy in this video he really looks stoned at times. Check it out! Another rare one!)
4. Greg Howe: Hot Rock Licks
(1989, 60 Mins.)
(Without a doubt the best Guitar intro I have ever seen! Greg shreds with such madness and passion. This video is unreal and under-rated. Oh! There are some super funny clips of actors that play Jim from the TV show Taxi and Columbo in the video. Most of the video is very slow and it seemed Greg was very shy in it. Worth the money though.)
5. Kee Marcello
(1992, 60 Mins.)
(Kee Marcello formerly with the Swedish Band: Europe delivers an unbelivable solo in his song: Hammers Heart. What a tone and this song really is filled with deep emotion and a jazzy/bluesly feel! Awesome job and the keyboards really make this tune shine.)
6. Allan Holdsworth
(1992, 75 Mins.)
(Another rare video. Allan is the man! Very down-to-earth. Awesome tone and great feel. Very laid back and good advice and performances by Allan and his band.)
7. George Lynch: Guitar Bible
(1989, 43 Mins.)
(A very rare video although I heard it is now released on DVD after so many years. Great playing and laid back. George does an awesome neo-classical with lots of delay in it. It is a short clip of him on a classical. The rest of the video features George and his mad techinque. I met him briefly back in 2004/5 and I must admit he did not come across as nice as he did in this video. A very rare video though!)
8. Alexis Sklarevski: Slap Bass Program
(1987, 100 Mins.)
(Without a doubt the best and most informative Slap Bass Video out there. This video is very rare and I just found out about it back in 2005. It is still put out surprisingly by:www.videoprogressions.com an awesome great video with some awesome performances with smoking Guitar Solos and crashing Drum beats with lots of Slap Bass in the style of Fusion. This video is the Mack-Daddy and a must for all Bassists. Great video!)
9. All Star Bass Series: Right Hand Bass Techniques
(60 Mins.)
(An awesome All-Star cast. Great bassists sadly forgotten with all the @hit that is out today. Sweet Funk Bass lines and Grooves. A great video very laid back with some great performances.)
10. Louis Johnson: Instructional Bass Video (Vol. 1)
(45 Mins.)
(Louis Johnson is a Funk-Pop-Slap-Master! LOL... Awesome video and Part 2 is great too! Check it out!)
11. Andy Summers: Guitar
(1996, Hot Licks, Orignally on VHS in 2 Tapes)
(Great Guitar Player! Nice feel! This was on VHS but now is released on DVD. The Video is very laid back with advice and performaces by Andy. He has a great concept with Chords -- which I love! Check it out!)
12. Jeff Berlin
(1987, Star Licks)
(Very good video! Very entertaining as well! There are rare appearances and super funny bizzare clips with the Wrestler (when wrestling was good and not crap like today) Hot Rod Roddy Piper! Jeff Berlin is a great Bass player and there is performance with Jeff and the band which includes some short clips with Frank Gambale. Nice video and interesting techinques.)
13. Michael Angelo Batio
(1987, Star Licks)
(Extremely Rare Video! He gives great advice and does not come off with a jerk snobby ego. Great Guitar Player but just wish for a little more feel and emotion. Hard to find this Video from 1987).
